Shake Down is the debut studio album by the British blues rock band Savoy Brown. It was released in 1967 (on Decca SKL 4883) under the name of Savoy Brown Blues Band and is mainly an album of covers, featuring three songs penned by blues singer Willie Dixon. In addition to Dixon, the band covers John Lee Hooker and B.B. King. Savoy Brown (Originally, Savoy Brown Blues Band) are an English blues rock band formed by guitarist Kim Simmonds and harmonica player John O'Leary, in Battersea, south west London in 1965. Part of the late 1960s blues rock movement, Savoy Brown primarily achieved success in the United States, where they promoted their albums with non-stop touring. After leaving Savoy Brown, musicians became members of groups such as Yes, Fleetwood Mac, UFO and Foghat.

Modern Electric Blues, Texas Blues, Blues Rock | Icehouse Records #ICD 9422-2

Blues-rock with a distinct Texas edge is Mark May's thing. His playing recalls various Texas legends like Johnny Winter and Albert Collins, while always skirting the rock speed-demon side of the musical equation. This outing finds him surrounded by his regular rhythm section of Dan Cooper on bass, Travis Doyle on organ and Greg Grubbs on drums. May shares guitar soloing duties throughout the album with Alan Haynes ("Don't Give Up"), Billy Wells ("Mercury Blues") and Larry McCray (an impassioned Albert Collins duel on their mentor's "The Lights Are On, But Nobody's Home"), producing fireworks with every trill and bent note. Also noteworthy are several tracks featuring the Memphis Horns, who shine brightly on "Icehouse Special" and the soul ballad "Took Me By Surprise." When May keeps his playing roped in and restrained, the musical results are well worth a second listen.

Rick Derringer follows up his excellent 1998 release, Tend the Fire with another blues-rock CD. While Blues Deluxe doesn't have quite the scope and variety of Tend the Fire, it is nonetheless an excellent CD, as Rick takes a couple more steps farther from rock and closer to the blues. This is not to say that Blues Deluxe approaches being a traditional blues CD. Rick has been playing Rock n' Roll and Hard Rock for nearly all of his 30+ year career. During live performances, Rick displays amazing proficiency playing that style of music. He is certainly one of the most talented guitartists performing today. But his head-on, full bore guitar attack, fully present on his first two blues releases for Blues Bureau, is too heavy for all but the most guitar-hungry of blues fans.

Hailed from Toronto, Canada and recorded this only album at Bearsville in Woodstock in 1971. The album was engineered and produced by Todd Rundgren. In some sense, they remind of famous major acts such as David Clayton Thomas and The Band. It is a nicely arranged blues rock, country rock with a bit of psychedelic mood.

The Faces were an English Rock band formed in 1969 by members of the Small Faces after lead singer/guitarist Steve Marriott left that group to form Humble Pie. The remaining Small Faces—Ian McLagan (keyboards), Ronnie Lane (bass), and Kenney Jones (drums and percussion)—were joined by Ronnie Wood (guitar) and Rod Stewart (lead vocals), both from the Jeff Beck Group, and the new line-up was renamed the Faces.

Power trio instrumental electric guitar rock to accompany footage of surfers, ranging from raging metal to wailing ballads. Jimi Hendrix lives again, and this time his name is Gary Hoey. A versatile American hard rock guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, Gary Hoey found success in 1993 with a hard-hitting cover of Focus' "Hocus Pocus," which became one of the most ubiquitous singles of the year. Hoey emerged in the late 1980s as a leading candidate to replace Jake E. Lee in Ozzy Osbourne's band (the job went to Zakk Wylde), and he later went on to found the short-lived glam metal group Heavy Bones. Since going solo in 1993, Hoey has issued a string of LPs – such as Bug Alley (1996), Wake Up Call (2003), and Neon Highway Blues (2019) – that run the gamut from rock and blues to fusion. He has worked alongside Roger Daltrey, Johnny Winter, Joe Perry, Brian May, Steve Vai, and Dick Dale, among others.

Scotty Bratcher, born October 31, 1987, began playing guitar at an age that it became second nature to him, he was 2. By this time, Stevie Ray Vaughan was impressing the world, and when the 1989 release of Austin City Limits was aired, you can imagine where Scotty was-in front of the television. Scotty's father had acquired, over time, a few electric guitars that he introduced to the toddler.

John Lennon would have turned 67 in 2007. If alive, he could well be at the forefront of bringing peace to Darfur, where more than half a million have died from violence and disease during four years of rebel discord. So to create awareness of the ongoing conflict, Amnesty International (with permission from Yoko Ono) has mined Lennon's solo work and rounded up nearly two dozen current artists to reinterpret the music, which spans the ex-Beatle's entire post-band catalog (plus a pair from while the Fab Four were still in business). As with any attempt to cover Beatles-related music, results are hit and miss, with kudos going to Snow Patrol and the Postal Service for capturing the starkness of "Isolation" and "Grow Old with Me," respectively, Mexican rock band Jaguares for uncovering the fear and fury in "Gimme Some Truth," and (surprise!) Christina Aguilera for nailing the complex composition and mood of "Mother." Other highlights include Jackson Browne's piano-led "Oh My Love," Green Day's louder straight take on "Working Class Hero," and the Black Eyed Peas turning "Power to the People" into a gospelly protest. Will resurrecting 30-to-40-year-old messages of peace and love be enough to help end the brutalities in Darfur? That remains to be seen. But selecting John Lennon as the author of those messages will make people listen and, with this collection, may keep them listening.
