50 Hi-Octane Cuts From The Golden Age Of The Automobile - Fantastic Voyage dips into rock ’n’ roll’s hotwired legacy of automobile anthems and highway love serenades in the latest tarmac-scorching compilation put together with Wild Wax Show DJ ‘Jailhouse’ John Alexander and Lucky Parker. Since the birth of rock ’n’ roll, the car has occupied a special place in teenage rampage and backseat romance, rock ’n’ roll music essential as both soundtrack pumping out of the radio or celebration of heaven on wheels. Over two discs, revving up engines and screeching brakes introduce 50 road-worthy classics, including lesser-heard gems rarely encountered on CD (if at all) by names such as the Storey Sisters, Don Pearly, Burt Keyes, Eddie Ringo, Dave ‘Diddle’ Day, Rocky Davis…

A surprising perfectionist, Elvis was known to record dozens of takes for many of his records, often loosening up at the beginning of a session by playing around with different readings of the songs he'd decided to record; and while he got the feel of how he wanted his performances to go, the tape rolled. Commemorating the 25th anniversary of his death, RCA's four-disc Today, Tomorrow, & Forever presented fans with 100 tracks of previously unreleased Presley, a parade of alternate takes - both very welcome and curiously not so - and scattered live recordings from throughout his career. (Although not a career record, the version of 1958's "Doncha' Think It's Time" used here was the 48th, and final take)…

Elvis Presley doesn't really need more compilations - either single discs or box sets - in his catalog, but RCA's 1999 triple-disc set Artist of the Century does wind up filling a need, of sorts. Over the course of 75 tracks, nearly all of Elvis' most popular songs are presented in their original hit versions. Given the number of hits he had, plus the high quality of his recordings in the late '50s and late '60s, there are inevitably big songs missing, but many of his very biggest are here, and the first two discs, in particular, are quite strong (the late-'60s/'70s selections slip somewhat, lacking such necessary items as "Kentucky Rain" and "Moody Blue"). So, this winds up being good one-stop shopping for those who just want one fairly comprehensive Elvis set in their library - although you should be forewarned that "fairly" is the key word in that statement, since this will not contain all the hits or necessary recordings.

The Champs were an American rock and roll band, most famous for their Latin-tinged instrumental "Tequila". The group took their name from the name of Gene Autry's horse, Champion, and was formed by studio executives at Autry's Challenge Records to record a B-side for the Dave Burgess single, "Train to Nowhere". The intended throwaway track became more famous than its A-side, as "Tequila" went to No. 1 in just three weeks, and the band became the first group to go to the top spot with an instrumental that was their first release. The song was recorded at Gold Star Studios in fall 1957, and in 1959 won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA.

He had the high pomaded hair, almost like straight up with a little wave. He had all kinds of wild sunglasses, wild clothes, baggy pants. He used to like to play that plink-plink type of sound, the real high keys more than anything else. When you'd say you were going to see Esquerita there would be a lot of people who would want to go, because they knew they were in for a show. The parking lot at the old 'Safari Room' used to be packed, boy." It woulda sewed us Rock'n'Roll fans well if that raw energy Delle talked about made itself well on vinyl again, but from Esquerita's first post-Capitol side, 'Green Door' on Minit, the results were alarmingly tame. Despite the \/oola's outwardly wild, almost insane personality, his ‘60s records belie the true Esquerita craziness.

Du Fond Du Coeur is a bootleg CD by The Rolling Stones, consisting of different performances the band did in Paris in the mid 1960's. While the CD does not have a date listed anywhere, it is possible this was released in the early 2000's but it is anyone's guess. What is certain is the label that released this: Osa/Bong.

Any casual listener looking over this 132-track five-CD set would probably conclude that it was far more Bill Haley than they need bite off in one gulp - and they'd be right, as casual listeners. For the serious rock & roll enthusiast, as well as the hardcore Bill Haley fan, however, there's a wealth of worthwhile material to be found here, some of which will amaze even those fans: a dozen great songs and 55 or so more that are good, and another 20 that are fascinating mistakes, and that's a good average for an artist who is generally thought of as having generated just a handful of important records. What Haley had most of all was a distinctive sound - between the backbeat, the country boogie roots, and the R&B sources - that pretty much defined white rock & roll for almost its first two years (until Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins emerged in the spring of 1956); the first two CDs here offer that sound in abundance…
