Jump Blues, Rockabilly | House Rent Records #HRR786

The House Jumpers bring you authentic up-tempo blues from America’s Heartland. The band’s great vocal melodies, big guitars, and jumpabilly grooves are designed for dancing. This album is true American music, combining jump blues and rockabilly flavors, by a powerful new band from USA. This music was born in American cities such as Memphis, New Orleans, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Kansas City. Early versions of jump blues featured horns, but well-known guitarists, such as T-Bone Walker, pioneered the addition of electric guitar to swing and jump music after WWII. Rockabilly music emerged during the same time through the marriage of rural country music to blues and swing rhythm.

Best of Mano Negra is a compilation album by Mano Negra, released in 1998. It included their greatest hits from 1988 to 1994. Mano Negra (complete Spanish name: La Mano Negra, sometimes nicknamed La Mano in France) was a music group active from 1987 to 1995 and fronted by Manu Chao. The group was founded in Paris by Chao, his brother (Antoine) and cousin (Santiago), all born of Spanish parents with partly Cuban roots. Their songs were mostly in Spanish, English and French, often switching from one language to the other in the same song or in the middle of a sentence or title (e.g. "Puta's Fever"). They also had a hit song in Arabic. They are considered pioneers of world fusion. Mano Negra incorporated an impressive array of musical styles: punk rock, flamenco, ska, salsa, French chanson, hip hop, raï, rockabilly, reggae and African rhythms.

A major influence on artists as varied as roots rocker Dave Edmunds, Lou Reed, and Bruce Springsteen (two of whose Lucky Town songs he covers here), Dion effectively mixes his tough yet delicate city-styled street corner harmonies with basic Chuck Berry chords to produce evocative tunes that, although embedded in the echoes of his youth, bubble with a soothing, low-key effervescence. Dion's perennially youthful voice delightfully swoops and swirls on the autobiographical "In New York City" and the Everly Brothers-styled "Hey Suzy," but it's on the Springsteen tracks, especially the beautiful a cappella ballad "If I Should Fall Behind," which seems like it was written with this arrangement in mind, that the concept fully clicks.

The Fireballs moved on from the successes of "Torquay" and "Vaquero" for Top Rank and cut this gem of an album for Warwick in 1961. The leadoff single was "Rik-A-Tik," which they had already cut for Top Rank, followed by "Quite a Party," another Top 30 hit for the band. The resulting album was another collection of crisply played instrumentals, most with a Spanish theme, all expertly produced by Norman Petty. Another one to add to your Fireballs collection, and superior to many of their later Dot albums.

There never was a supergroup more super than the Traveling Wilburys. They had Jeff Lynne, the leader of ELO; they had Roy Orbison, the best pop singer of the '60s; they had Tom Petty, the best roots rocker this side of Bruce Springsteen; they had a Beatle and Bob Dylan, for crying out loud! It's impossible to picture a supergroup with a stronger pedigree than that (all that's missing is a Rolling Stone), but in another sense it's hard to call the Wilburys a true supergroup, since they arrived nearly two decades after the all-star craze of the '70s peaked, and they never had the self-important air of nearly all the other supergroups. That, of course, was the key to their charm: they were a group of friends that fell together easily, almost effortlessly, to record a B-side for a single for George Harrison, then had such a good time they stuck around to record a full album, which became a hit upon its 1988 release. The Traveling Wilburys was big enough to convince the group to record a second album, cheerfully and incongruously titled Vol. 3, two years later despite the death of Orbison…

Living in a swamp would be a much more attractive proposition if Webb Wilder was your next door neighbor. Rather than an icky bog, Wilder's musical bayou is populated by hoodoo witches, crazed landlords, Russian satellites, strange dreams and self-effacing humor. The Mississippi-raised / Nashville-based Wilder and band start from a basic blues style fused to rootsy rock, then shish-kebab the result with a skewered view of mundane existence. Echoes of 50s instrumental rock, British Invasion, garage grunge and psychedelia all surface throughout the album. Doo Dad doesn't quite hit the emotional depth of the group's previous Hybrid Vigor release, but Wilder sure knows how to ladle out the Southern hospitality.

This superb live recording, taken from an FM radio broadcast of The Band playing at the Mandel Hall - a seated concert venue holding 750 situated within the University of Chicago - during their first re-union tour following the group s split in 1976, subsequent to their Last Waltz concert - was nothing short of a roaring success. Despite the absence of Robbie Robertson who, following some perhaps unfortunate remarks made by Rick Danko after the initial split, had declined to take part , which some critics saw as blasphemous. Robbie had also, by this juncture, all but turned his back on the worlds of pop and rock music and was concentrating largely on movies, in which he would sometimes feature in an acting role, sometimes provide some or all of the soundtrack for, and sometimes do both. The other four however were hungry to get back on the road and did just that in July 1983; this CD is an excellent illustration of what went down during these initial re-union gigs.
