2008 five CD box. The Original Album Classics series, courtesy of Sony/BMG, packages together five classic albums from one of the most popular artists on the label's roster, housing them in an attractive slipcase. This set from the Soul icons features five of their albums recorded after they left the comforts of Motown and headed over to Epic with more artistic control over their recordings: The Jacksons (1976), Goin' Places (1977), Destiny (1978), Triumph (1980) and Victory (1984). These albums show how quickly the Jacksons, as a recording unit, were progressing beyond their Pop-oriented Motown recordings and reconnecting with their Soul roots.

What Up, Dog? is a 1988 album by Was (Not Was). It became the US group's breakthrough album worldwide and was ranked #99 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Best Albums of the 1980s. Success of What Up, Dog? was propelled by the group's two biggest hits: "Walk the Dinosaur" and "Spy in the House of Love" and four other singles. The former was promoted by a popular music video in which the band performed while a group of girls in campy cave girl costumes danced.

The Jackson 5 were one of the biggest phenomenons in pop music during the early '70s, and the last great group to come out of the Motown hitmaking machine before Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder shifted the label's focus to more individual visions. The Jackson 5's infectious brand of funky pop-soul was a definite departure from the typically smooth, elegant Motown sound, as befitting the group's youth and the dawn of a new decade. That youth, coupled with the merchandising juggernaut that sprang up behind them, inevitably got them tagged a bubblegum group. But they were far more talented musically than that label would suggest, especially lead singer Michael, and their material, while sunny and upbeat, didn't pander to its audience. Solo careers and overexposure gradually weakened the Jackson 5, but their best music still holds up surprisingly well as some of the most vibrant mainstream pop/R&B of its era.

Stupendously rare or unissued New Orleans R&B and blues in incomparable sound quality. Despite being based in Linden, New Jersey, DeLuxe recorded all across the USA in the company’s formative period in an attempt to score hits. DeLuxe was the first indie to tap into what was going on in the Crescent City in the years immediately following WWII. The label’s biggest find during that time was Roy Brown, the subject of two CDs in our “King & DeLuxe Acetates” series. In “Beef Ball Baby!” you can hear the surviving acetates of some of the other highly talented people DeLuxe recorded in New Orleans in the acetate era.

This CD is part of a comprehensive study of the early influences of rock & roll. The blues and rhythm & blues sound created by African American artists, as well as a few crossover Anglo musicians, in the late '30s, '40s, and the '50s, laid the foundation for what was to become rock & roll. It was a sound characterized by a throbbing drumbeat and sensual notes on piano and horns, often with lyrics to match its earthy quality. Volume six collects some notable recordings of the year 1950, just before the big rock & roll explosion caused by artists such as Bill Haley & His Comets and Elvis Presley. The compilation makes clear the great musical debt these artists, who became rich and famous, owed to earlier artists, many of whom remained poor and obscure…

"Aromanticism is a concept album about lovelessness as a sonic dreamscape," Moses Sumney stated in a blog post. "It seeks to interrogate the idea that romance is normative and necessary." It’s also a debut album that establishes its author as a very special voice. The exquisite “Quarrel”—all foreboding bass, levitating harp, and trippy soul—is spine-chilling, “Make Out in My Car” glides by suggestively with a chemtrail of flutes, and on the acoustic “Indulge Me,” Sumney is sincere, vulnerable, and quietly devastating.

An amazing piece of work - a massive eight-disc boxed set that contains every one of Fats Domino's 1949-1962 Imperial waxings. That's a tremendous load of one artist, but the legacy of Domino and his partner Dave Bartholomew is so consistently innovative and infectious that it never grows tiresome for a second. From the clarion call of "The Fat Man," Domino's 1949 debut, to the storming "Dance with Mr. Domino" in 1962, he typified everything charming about Crescent City R&B, his Creole patois and boogie-based piano a non-threatening vehicle for the rise of rock & roll.

Dazzle was yet one of several short-lived studio projects that featured the indelible mark of keyboardist, vocalist, producer, and arranger LeRoy Burgess. With strings and horns arranged by longtime mentor and underground disco phenom Patrick Adams, and with production duties split with Stan Lucas, Burgess delivered a full-length disco album for the De-Lite label in 1979. Dazzle was a strong album that featured "Reaching" and "You Dazzle Me," two singles that were warmly received on dance floors. Though the record wasn't the funkiest thing Burgess kicked out during his prolific career, its uplifting spirit and exquisitely arrangements have helped make it a favorite of Burgess followers.

The New York-born disco band Crown Heights Affair is best known for their Top Five R&B/Top 40 pop hit "Dreaming a Dream." On Dream World, the group combined the optimistic tone of that smash with a slightly heavier funk tone; though their trademark horn sound is still in tact, "Galaxy of Love" is a fun, brassy romp that retains some of the frothy flavor of "Dreaming" and was a Top Five hit in the U.K. The huge club hit "Say a Prayer for Two" has gospel-ish lead vocals, a driving bass similar to Brass Construction's "Movin,'' and charted number 41 R&B in the fall of 1978.
