This 8CD set contains the complete harpsichord works by Handel! Handel was, like his contemporaries J.S. Bach and Scarlatti, a formidable keyboard player, a virtuoso displaying “an uncommon brilliancy and command of finger” (Handel’s first biographer John Mainwaring). Although Handel’s focus was on opera and oratorio (much more commercial…) his output for the harpsichord is of high quality, great variety and instrumental originality.

Handels Messiah is already very well-represented on the market with dozens of existing recordings and new productions appearing at regular intervals. Yet this is a very special version, carefully crafted, Halle Handel Edition in hand, by a Basel-based selection of fine vocal soloists and instrumentalists who have all graduated from the world-famous Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Under the fine direction of Daniela Dolci, singers Miriam Feuersinger, Flavio Ferri-Benedeti, Dino Luthy and Raitis Grigalis join the ensemble Musica Fiorita for a moving studio recording made in October 2015. For obtaining the very nuanced sound aesthetics which define this recording, the chosen cast is deliberately small: alongside the soloists, two ripieni per voice were used for the choir. In contrast, the instrumental ensemble is composed of two violins and one oboe per part as well as a viola, cello, bassoon, violone, two theorbos, two harpsichords, and two positive organs for the basso continuo group. The optimal balance is achieved with the use of natural trumpets without finger holes. All in all, a welcome breath of fresh air for one of the finest compositions of all time.

The final Canned Heat album to feature co-founder Alan Wilson, Future Blues was also one of their best, surprisingly restrained as a studio creation by the band, the whole thing clocking in at under 36 minutes, as long as some single jams on their live discs. It was also one of their most stylistically diverse efforts. Most of what's here is very concise and accessible, even the one group-composed jam – Alan Wilson's "Shake It and Break It" and his prophetically titled "My Time Ain't Long" (he would be dead the year this record was issued), which also sounds a lot like a follow-up to "Going up the Country" until its final, very heavy, and up-close guitar coda.

For a group of unique guys like Set It Off, it seems as though one day, not a soul knew who they were, and then the next, the whole world was aware of their name; not to mention the great music that followed. Starting out just like any other, the band climbed their way to the top, playing local shows with small handfuls of people, and working with the utmost dedication in hopes of the scene knowing their music; and it was not long until they did. Through a lineup change that trickled down to four, Set It Off have endured enough stress to know a thing or two about the music business; ultimately ending with extremely catchy songs that will be, and are already, sung by thousands.

Hold On! is the fourth album by the rocking soul man James Hunter and his stalwart sextet. Daptone's Gabriel Roth produced the excellent Minute by Minute in 2013, but this is the band's debut for the label. Hold On! was recorded live in the studio, but Roth and Hunter decided on mono to best capture the immediacy of the performances. The songwriter has recorded only original material since 2006, and these ten tracks are no exception. What separates this date from previous outings – excellent though they all were – isn't the mono production, but the diversity in songwriting, rhythmic invention, and arranging. "This Is Where We Came In" may contain a simmering organ, but doo wop-esque backing vocals from Gregory Lee, Alex Desert, and Malik Moore elevate it (and the two other cuts they appear on) beyond the early pop-soul framework that it comes adorned in. So do the cha-cha rhythms, rhumba fills, and comps from Andrew Kingslow's piano.

For five decades, vocalist-composer Meredith Monk has explored what she calls “primordial utterance,” or non-verbal vocal sound that lay beneath and beyond language, expressing “that for which we have no words.” This exploration has led her to create music that The New Yorker describes as simultaneously “visceral and ethereal, raw and rapt,” an art that “sings, dances and meditates on timeless forces.” With her latest, multivalent ECM New Series album, Monk aimed to address ecology and climate change, she says: “Believing that music speaks more directly than words, I worked to make a piece with a fluid, perceptual field that could expand awareness of what we are in danger of losing. On Behalf of Nature is a meditation on our intimate connection to nature, its inner structures, the fragility of its ecology and our interdependence.” Voices and instruments have equal weight: sometimes each is heard alone; sometimes they are blended to form a new, mysterious sound; sometimes they are combined to create intricate, layered, yet transparent sonic landscapes.

The second album from the Hungarian-born Vienna-based guitarist finds her embracing a broad scope of music, broader even than on her outstanding debut En otra parte. This time the range extends from contemporary composition to jazz etude via music from Brazil, Argentina, Italy and Azerbaijan - all embraced with imagination and creative flair. Pieces played here by Zsófia Boros include Egberto Gismonti’s challenging “Celebração de Núpcias” (made famous on Dança das cabeças), Franghiz Ali-Zadeh’s “Fantasie”, Al Di Meola’s “Vertigo Shadow”, and Carlo Domeniconi’s Turkish-influenced “Koyunbaba”. These Local Objects are rendered universal by Boros’s subtle and sensitive playing in an album recorded at Lugano’s Auditorio Stelio Molo in November 2015 and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach is the most famous of the sons of J.S. Bach. His magisterial oeuvre contains, notably, a large number of concertos for various instruments and keyboard pieces. But the composer also excelled at vocal music, thus continuing in the family tradition by composing, among other genres, sacred and secular cantatas and songs. His works respect the rules of Baroque style while also hinting at the dawn of the Classical style subsequently represented by Haydn and Mozart. Café Zimmermann has been including the music of C. P. E. Bach in its programmes for years, notably in a recording (ALPHA 107) that marked a turning point in the discography. A Leipzig newspaper wrote of the ensembles interpretation of works by Emanuel Bach: Anyone who has heard the sensational Café Zimmermann in this music, the brilliant, ardent spirit of their playing, their profusion of colours . . . will want to hear more of this composer. Here is a further opportunity to do so, in partnership with the English tenor Rupert Charlesworth, who recorded his first album in 2015 (Nocturnes, ZZT 355).

I’m so pleased to be reviewing this CD on International Women’s Day, as it’s an excellent example of what women can achieve with music. I was concerned when I read on the publicity sheet that the album was ‘for and to the sentient beings of our planet’, which sounded a bit pompous to my ears, but there is nothing pompous at all about the CD, which gives us fine jazz-influenced music and lyrics with an original, quirky and sometimes moving twist. For example, there are 2 songs about contemporary concerns: Dear Humans deals with climate change and the earth is speaking to us: ‘I’m as old as the hills/ and forever your mother/but your way of living kills/You need me, sisters and brothers/It seems that you don’t bother."

Mick Softley's 1972 album released for the first time on CD. Born in 1941 in South Woodford, Essex, Mick Softley was at the forefront of the folk revival scene of the early 1960s. Mick helped Donovan with guitar-picking styles when they were both involved with the folk club in The Cock pub in St Albans. Later, Donovan would record two of Mick's songs 'The War Drags On' and 'Goldwatch Blues'. Recorded at The Manor in Oxfordshire and at Sound Techniques, Chelsea, musicians included Jerry Donahue (Fotheringay / Fairport Convention), Gerry Conway (Fotheringay), Pat Donaldson (Fotheringay), Barry de Souza (Curved Air) and Lyn Dobson (Manfred Mann / Soft Machine). Produced by Tony Cox, talented keyboard player who played with Sandy Denny and Mike Heron. 'Disc and Music Echo' magazine probably captured the essence of this unique recording most succinctly when they reviewed the album and stated that 'listening to it, one almost feels an intruder into the man's soul'.

Coming so quickly after the release of Multitude of Angels and being from the same time as Koln Concert, I initially thought that Keith and ECM were looking at releasing more of his treasure trove of a back catalogue. However, this is a recording from Hi-Hat and an explanatory note says "All our releases feature historical live FM recordings from the '60s, '70s and '80s and although the sound may not (despite extensive professional remastering) always be of the highest quality, we are sure that you will enjoy the musical experience of these wonderful performances".
