Rory Gallagher's solo debut picks up where On The Boards left off - it's a solid, but significantly less raucous, blues rock outing with ten original tunes that were far more than skeletons for his incisive Strat picking. "Laundromat," "Hands Up," and "Sinner Boy"'s distinctive riffs were early concert favorites, but the album's ballads were some of Gallagher's strongest. "For the Last Time," "Just the Smile" and the acoustic "I'm Not Surprised" mixed strains of Delta blues with strong melodic sensibilities into songs of rare poignancy, especially for an artist who was best known for his scorching leads. In this respect Gallagher was an early model for Eric Clapton, whose solo career followed a similar path.

Thrash Metal

Although they surely qualify as one of England's most successful thrash metal bands, Lancashire's hapless Xentrix ultimately came to epitomize all of Great Britain's relatively insignificant contributions to speed metal – as compared to the genre's utterly dominating American bands. Formed in 1986 (as Sweet Vengeance, in the town of Preston) by vocalist/guitarist Chris Astley, guitarist Kristian Havard, bassist Paul MacKenzie, and drummer Dennis Gasser, Xentrix started life, not surprisingly, as a Metallica cover band, gradually drawing attention to themselves on the U.K. pub circuit and with their 1988 demo, Hunger For…. Fledgling Roadrunner Records soon took notice and signed the band, releasing their debut album, Shattered Existence, in 1989, and, later that year, the now infamous Ghost Buster EP…

Recorded in New York City during May and June of 1969, this excellent album reveals the very core of Memphis Slim's blues artistry. He kneads the piano and sings his heart out in front of a tough little band comprised of R&B tenor sax legend Eddie Chamblee, an unidentified organist, guitarist Billy Butler, bassist Lloyd Trotman, and drummer Herb Lovelle. An anonymous utility horn section shows up during the rocking "Sassy Mae." "Ramble This Highway" (better known as "Key to the Highway") was written by Jazz Gillum, "Rock Me Baby" is credited to Big Bill Broonzy, and the famous "Caldonia" was composed by Fleecie Moore. The rest of the material heard on this album comes straight out of Slim's catalog of original songs. Check out Slim's relaxed sermon on "Freedom" and his candid statement about having the blues because he is black…

Hot on the heels of session work with Miles Davis and his Kind of Blue-era group, alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley recorded this excellent live date with his brother, cornetist Nat Adderley, along with pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes. The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco defined the accessible, yet technically challenging, soul-jazz that Adderley would be associated with for the rest of his career. The warm, exuberant feel of the quintet is especially evident on the set's two finest tracks - a spirited take on Randy Weston's "Hi-Fly," and on Timmons' swinging "This Here"…

L'ombra Della Sera are a new project from prolific Italian soundsmith Fabio Zuffanti and his cohorts Maurizio Di Tollo and Agostino Macor from the modern symphonic outfit La Maschera Di Cera. The idea was to pay homage to those groovy Italian sountracks/tv themes from the 1970s by doing new interpretations using vintage instruments and techniques. The original compositions were written by well known composers Enrico Simonetti, Berto Pisano, Romeo Grano, and Riz Ortolani, however the new arrangements are so ambitious and carefully crafted that they feel like something completely fresh…

The Concerto for Group and Orchestra is a concerto composed by Jon Lord, with lyrics written by Ian Gillan. It was first performed by Deep Purple and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Arnold on 24 September 1969 and released on vinyl in December 1969. After the score was lost in 1970, it was performed again in 1999 with a recreated score. The 1969 performance was among the first combinations of rock music with a full orchestra, and paved the way for other rock/orchestra performances such as Procol Harum Live: In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (1972), Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1974), Roger Waters' The Wall – Live in Berlin performance (1990), and Metallica's S&M concert (1999).

Released in 1994 to coincide with the Stones' catalog moving to Virgin Records, as well as the accompanying remastering of their Rolling Stone Records catalog (1971's Sticky Fingers through 1989's Steel Wheels – actually 1991's Flashpoint, which is the last Rolling Stones Records release, but isn't featured here), Jump Back supplants Rewind as the best single-disc overview of the Stones' '70s and '80s recordings. The nonchronological order at times is a little irritating – bouncing between "Brown Sugar," "Harlem Shuffle," "It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)," "Mixed Emotions," and "Angie" nearly causes whiplash – but nearly all the big songs from this period are included.

Tresor Records is delighted to welcome Rod Modell to its catalogue, with the release of his new album Captagon. Rod Modell needs no introduction, his various projects render him a master of techno. In repetition and barely noticeable change, Modell resculptures perceptions. His sound-design echoes cinematic ethereality, where ferric artefacts slam against percussion, rusty delays filter observation - the resulting web is a complex, radiating ambience that etches a natural ebb and flow.

Music For The Masses (it’s title deliberately tongue-in-cheek) was issued in 1987 and co-produced by Dave Bascombe (best known at that point for his work with Tears For Fears). Less dense than it’s predecessor, this album managed to deliver some classic singles in (particularly in ‘Strangelove’ and ‘Never Let Me Down Again’) even if, again, they weren’t massive commercial successes at the time. Music For The Masses is a personal favourite for this writer – managing to be intimate, cinematic, and industrial all at the same time – and this album and the 101 tour very much laid the groundwork for the next album Violator which of course was massive, both creatively and commercially. Music For The Masses: The 12″ Singles breaks new ground by including SEVEN 12-inch singles; two for each of the first three singles and one for slightly forgotten fourth single ‘Little 15’. It too includes a poster. All audio was remastered at Abbey Road Studios and these come with download cards offering 16- bit WAV files.

Post Orgasmic Chill is the third studio album by British rock band Skunk Anansie, first released in 1999. Two album covers exist: the European version with the band lounging in an oceanside apartment, and the American version with the band standing on the Atlantic City boardwalk. It was a complete departure from their previous two albums, which had elements of punk rock and alternative rock by moving to a new harder sound with elements of hard rock and alternative metal. The album title resembles the title of the 13th song, a Japanese bonus track called Post Orgasmic Sleep. The album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's tough-minded approach to the blues, country, Cajun, and jazz insures a minimum of nonsense and a maximum of variety, while his virtuosity on the guitar and fiddle insures the highest standards. Nonetheless, Brown's 1997 album is a landmark for the 73-year-old picker who won a Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer Award. All 13 tunes on Gate Swings find Brown working with his regular road quartet plus a 13-piece horn section, enabling him to prove that Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Lionel Hampton have been as important to his music as any bluesman or Creole fiddler. Gate Swings includes tunes by all three of those big-band leaders as well as compositions by Buddy Johnson, Percy Mayfield, Louis Jordan, and Brown himself, and they all swing with the massive force that only a big horn section can muster. Brown has leaned in this direction before, but Gate Swings is special, because it features the horn arrangements of Wardell Quezergue, an alumnus of the Dave Bartholomew band who arranged many of the best New Orleans R&B hits in the '60s and '70s.

Reissue with the latest DSD remastering. Comes with liner notes. One of the hippest albums ever recorded by bassist Gary Peacock – one of his rare Japanese-only sessions, and a date that beautifully mixes his bass with acoustic and electric piano from Masabumi Kikuchi! The sound is often somewhat dark – building up slowly from the bottom on long, contemplative lines from Peacock's bass – as Kikuchi fills things in with some slightly sharp edges, but never too much so. The rest of the group features twin drums from Masahiko Togashi and Hiroshi Murakami – although each player drops out for a number apiece. Titles are all originals by Gary – and include "Hollows", "Bonsho", "Ishi", "Voice From The Past", "Requiem", and "Ae Ay".
