It may be far too obvious to even mention that Norah Jones' follow-up to her 18-million-unit-selling, eight-Grammy-winning, genre-bending, super-smash album Come Away with Me has perhaps a bit too much to live up to. But that's probably the biggest conundrum for Jones: having to follow up the phenomenal success of an album that was never designed to be so hugely popular in the first place. Come Away with Me was a little album by an unknown pianist/vocalist who attempted to mix jazz, country, and folk in an acoustic setting – who knew? Feels Like Home could be seen as "Come Away with Me Again" if not for that fact that it's actually better.

Tony Bennett and Diana Krall's partnership didn't begin with the 2018 duets album Love Is Here to Stay. Krall popped up on two prior duets albums from Bennett and the pair toured at the dawn of the 2000s, but Love Is Here to Stay marks their first full record together, and it's an elegant affair. Conceived as a tribute to George Gershwin, the album is filled with familiar tunes, but hints of imagination lurk around the edges, such as the revival of "Fascinating Rhythm," the tune Bennett recorded for his first single in 1949. Nearly 70 years separate that version of "Fascinating Rhythm" from this 2018 rendition, and while Bennett certainly sounds older – his voice is slightly raspy, he can't hit the high notes the way he used to, nor does he sing with quite as much force – he still sounds spry and commanding, happily dancing through these cozy melodies, singing with as much rhythm as lyricism.

Returning to her early Three Blind Mice period form, Ayako Hosokawa delivered one of her most popular albums ever in 1993 with A Whisper of Love. Working with a fine ensemble of American jazz players (along with pianist Shota Osabe on two tracks), her delivery had developed a quiet confidence: relaxed and playful. Available for the first time in pristine 24K gold compact disc, this great set of classic torch songs gives Ms. Hosokawa a matchless showcase for her melifluous tone and buttery delivery.

Carmen McRae, a good friend of Thelonious Monk, sang 13 of his songs (two of which are also heard in different live versions) on this memorable project. Half of the lyrics are by Jon Hendricks, while the remainder were written by Abbey Lincoln ("Blue Monk"), Bernie Hanighen, Sally Swisher, or Mike Ferro. On all but the two concert performances, McRae is assisted by tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, pianist Eric Gunnison, bassist George Mraz, and drummer Al Foster; Mraz's solos are particularly impressive, although everyone is in sensitive form. The live recordings give listeners two more chances to acknowledge the uniqueness of tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse's tone…

If you asked a passing stranger who the most famous female jazz singer was, Ella Fitzgerald would almost certainly be the first name to spring to mind. Sometimes called The First Lady Of Song , her record sales testify to the fact that she was the most popular US female jazz singer for over 50 years. In a career that started with her first recording in 1936 and lasted until the early Nineties despite coronary bypass surgery in 1986, she recorded over 200 albums that sold over 40 million copies and won 13 Grammy awards. In 1955 Fitzgerald left Decca Records and joined the newly founded Verve. This 3 disc compilation showcases the wide-ranging vocal capabilities of a legendary singer as she delivers some of the most famous songs from her repertoire, sung at the height of her career.

Following her brilliant album “Verso”, recorded a couple of years earlier, Italian Jazz singer Maria Pia De Vito returns with her second album on the splendid Provocateur label. Her two faithful companions on the previous album: British pianist John Taylor and US guitarist Ralph Towner are back with her again, but this time the instrumental ensemble is expanded to a quartet with the participation of legendary US bassist Steve Swallow and French drummer / percussionist Patrice Heral. The music, composed by De Vito, Taylor, Towner and Swallow, is beautifully minimalist and quite complex, providing an ideal vehicle for the singer’s vocal explorations. She uses lyrics and vocalese interchangeably, with a rare ability to sound perfectly right at each given moment.

Ella Fitzgerald, 42 years after her recording debut, showed on this late concert recording that she still had the magic. Backed by pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Keter Betts, and drummer Bobby Durham, she sounds pretty strong at times, mostly singing veteran ballads but also getting hot on "Billie's Bounce."

After Paris and New York (more precisely Broadway), the last part of his travel trilogy Götz Alsmann leads to Rome. In his endeavor to successfully breathe new life into the jazz hit, Götzi has dedicated himself this time to Italian songs. In addition to well-known and less well-known Italian hits like Paolo Contes "Azzurro" (famous in the version of Adriano Celentano), "Nel blu di pinto di blu (Volare)" or "Ciao ciao bambina", which he has eloquently translated into German as usual , with "Caprifischer" but also a German song from the 50s, which reflects the Germans' Italian feeling at the time, and the American classic "Mambo Italiano" by Rosemary Clooney. A total of 18 songs found their way on "In Rom".

The LP is complemented here by singer's complete thematic allbum, About The Blues (1957), in which she devotes her sensuous voice to a variety of blues and blues-inspired tunes. This second LP was conducted and arranged by the well-known Russell Garsia. To round out this CD, we have also added four extra Julie London performances from the latter album's sessions, which were originally issued by the Liberty label as singles.

This fourth album from Manhattan Transfer was the first for Cheryl Bentyne, who replaced Laurel Masse after the original singer's auto accident and subsequent decision to leave the group. Though replacing Masse was difficult, Bentyne's energy and style proved to be the perfect complement to the group's already dynamic performance…
