The album is a probe for both the experimental side of disco and punk genres, as well as underground music scene in general. The first volume is more rock and funk oriented and features three experimental studio projects by Arthur Russell, namely Dinosaur, Indian Ocean and Loose Joints, British new wave musician Ian Dury, and even musicians like Yoko Ono, Steve Miller Band or jazz trumpeter Don Cherry. It was compiled by Joey Negro, a British DJ and producer.

The cleverly deceptive genius Patrick Adams was born March 17, 1950 in New York City. Some people are just destined for greatness and Adams was one of those. He wrote his first song at 12, recorded his first record at 16 and produced his first track at 17. It would take several more years for the world to realize his genius. In 1966 Patrick joined a neighborhood group and they immediately auditioned for a role in “Up The Down Staircase”. The boys won the part of the high school dance band and are featured in a segment of the Warner Brothers film. Two months later the guys, now known as “The Sparks,” were signed to Curb/MGM.

Sly Stewart is one of pop and rock's great enigmas. A charismatic performer, full of a boundless, good energy, a wonderful songwriter and, at least when he was in his prime, a man with a sure vision, Sly still somehow managed to throw it all away by the mid-'70s. The classic work he did with Sly & the Family Stone, though, is worth its weight in gold. This 20-track set has all the essential hits, including "Stand," "Everyday People," "Everybody Is a Star," "Family Affair," "Dance to the Music," and "I Want to Take You Higher," among others, and for most casual listeners, it has everything they'll really need.

Unlike other labels subjected to exhaustive multi-disc retrospectives like this whopping ten-disc Revolutions in Sound: Warner Bros. Records – The First Fifty Years, Warner Brothers never embodied a scene or sound: they've always embodied what a major label should be – a dominant force that chronicles and dictates the sound of the mainstream. Coming out at the tail-end of 2008, when the influence of major labels is on a slow steady decline, Revolutions in Sound can be seen as a portrait of a time that's beginning to recede into the past: a time when there was such a thing as mass entertainment, when the pop audience all shared a common bond of hit records they either loved or rallied against. Perhaps the greatest things about this monumental box set is that it captures that colossus while also illustrating that for a while, majors did take risks. Of course, Warner was the riskiest of all the majors, never held back by an anti-rock & roll sourpuss like Mitch Miller, who struggled to keep CBS out of the tumult of the '60s (this with no less than Bob Dylan as the label's flagship rock artist). Instead, Warner embraced the underground, recording some of the strangest to shake out of the '60s, and that adventure fits a label that turned to rock & roll to help establish themselves as a real player at the turn of the '60s.

XLD Rip | FLAC (Tracks) +CUE, LOG | 524 MB
Genre: Disco, Soul, Funk, Dance | Label: Hip-O Records | Catalog Number: HIPD-40097

Dance Queens' disco and postdisco vocal showcases all hit the dance charts, but few people who aren't seriously into dance history will know more than a couple of them. Some of this stuff is very much of its era–it's hard to hear Linda Clifford's 10-minute disco version of "Bridge over Troubled Water" as anything other than over-the-top kitsch, and the extended versions of late-'80s numbers like Cheryl Lynn's "New Dress" carry on their consummately boomy synth-drum patterns too long for casual listening. But compiler David Nathan also turns up some legitimate lost classics, like Chic singer Norma Jean Wright's longing "Saturday" and Vicki Sue Robinson's deliciously polyrhythmic "Hold Tight," a seldom-heard follow-up to "Turn The Beat Around."

With their long track record, Kool & the Gang have always offered dance-provoking rhythms and Something Special fits that bill, too. Featuring the number one single "Take My Heart (You Can Have It If You Want It)," James "J.T." Taylor approaches the song in a cool, mesmerizing tone, closing out the vamp in his falsetto with a burst of energy while the background vocals chant the subtitle throughout the chorus. Not known to lead a song in falsetto, Taylor further utilizes this talent on the motivated rhythms of the nocturnal scenario of "Steppin' Out." It maintained a steady stride, rising to the number ten spot on the charts. The third single from the album was "Get Down on It." As the title indicates, this is a gritty funk track that worked its way up the charts to claim the number three position, selling more than 500,000 copies. Although there were no more charted singles from this album, the entire collection is deserving of recognition. On a slower note, "Pass It On" and "No Show" received regional airplay.

On the Brink is a collection of 20 previously uncomped and absolutely superb UK instrumentals from the '60s and early '70s, assembled by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). Presenting session men discovering sitars, orchestras getting into the freaky side of things, hip theme tunes, Hammonds, fuzz and brass. Somehow sophisticated and cheesy simultaneously, these acts created their own musical world of Chelsea apartments, mini-mokes, dark velvet bespoke tailoring and the dolliest birds this side of Battersea Bridge. Welcome to the soundtrack of your own unmade Swinging London movie. Artists include: Mike Vickers, the Jim Sullivan Sound, the Shock Absorbers, Wynder K. Frog, Rita, Offside, the Les Reed Orchestra, David Smith, the Keith Mansfield Orchestra, the Dave Davani Four, the Fidd, Ken Woodman's Piccadilly Brass, the John Schroeder Orchestra, Trax Four, the Mike Cotton Sound, Lee Mason and his Orchestra, the Vic Flick Sound, the Chris Barber Soul Band, Brian Bennett and Stanley Myers.

Funk came of age in the 1970s when a term used in jazz circles for the previous two decades crossed over to the dancefloor. Our 16 slices are served up by acts ranging from Parliament -one of the genre's undisputed trendsetters, led by the irrepressible George Clinton- to Afro-rockers Osibisa and Cymande, taking in acts as diverse as girl group Honeycone and legendary 'Hustle' hitmakers The Fatback Band. Chairmen of the Board are one of five artists featured from the Invictus/Hot Wax stable, founded by the writing/production trio of Holland, Dozier and Holland. They struck out on their own after scoring hits with innumerable Motown acts; you can hear a touch of Stevie Wonder in 'Finders Keepers'. From Detroit we travel to New Jersey for our collection's title track, performed by female vocal duo Positive Force, which wrote their name in the last UK chart of the decade. If it's dance music with a heavy bass line and layered guitar, keyboard and vocals you're after, look no further - 'We Got The Funk'!
