The title tells the story on this EP – here former Jayhawks leader Gary Louris performs six songs from his solo debut Vagabonds, accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. These solo performances don't bring much that's new to these songs, but given how good Louris' songwriting was on Vagabonds, that's no insult; accompanied by a full band, they were compelling stuff, and Louris makes them work nearly as well with just his voice and a six-string. The emotional intimacy of "We'll Get By," "To Die a Happy Man," and "She Only Calls Me on Sunday" suits the spare interpretations on this EP just fine, and while these tracks often sound as if they're little more than demos, they're good demos of very good songs, and Louris' strength as a vocalist truly shines on this disc. Acoustic Vagabonds is a casual but pleasing set that will certainly satisfy anyone who has a taste for Louris' music, though they ought to give Vagabonds a spin before moving on to this supplement.

America/Brasil is a rollicking, celebratory album that keeps Herbie Mann on the winning streak he started with the release of Peace Pieces in 1995. Recorded during a week of concerts to mark his 65th birthday in April 1995, this disc is much stronger than its immediate predecessor, Celebration, also taken from the same week of live concert performances at New York's Blue Note jazz club. The material here is superb, and the playing top-notch. As the title implies, the emphasis here is on Mann's Brazilian side, but there are touches of the non-Brazilian with Bill Evans' "Peri's Scope" and Miles Davis' "All Blues." "Summertime" is recast in an Afro-Cuban mode with Paquito D'Rivera sharing the solo space on alto sax. However, lengthy Brazilian showstoppers are placed at the beginning, middle, and end of this wonderful disc. The opening "Keep the Spirits Singing" is propelled by the polyrhythmic pulse of percussionists Cyro Baptista and "Café," and the 17-minute title track finale features trumpeters Randy Brecker and Claudio Roditi, trombonist Jim Pugh, and guitarist Romero Lubambo.

Noah and the Whale became a leading light in the British folk scene with the release of 2008's Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down, their popular debut that cracked the U.K. Top Ten and spawned the hit single "5 Years Time." Formed in the southern suburbs of London, the band also attracted attention by serving as a launching pad for Laura Marling, who left the lineup to 2008 to launch an award-winning solo career. Noah and the Whale forged ahead in her absence, releasing albums that moved away from the band's folky bedrock while still maintaining a good amount of chart success. A collection includes: 'Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down' (2008), 'The First Days Of Spring' (2009), 'Last Night On Earth' (2011), 'Heart of Nowhere' (2013).

A classic Pascoal mix of fine Luso-jazz playing, elegant moments of more traditional modes (as in a pretty song with fine accordion), and various avant-gardisms, new wave-derived and more purely personal (Pascoal even samples Brazilian radio football commentators in a pair of less-than-a-minute cuts, drawing parallels between the music at hand and the announcers' narration of the games). Far more adventurous than Nascimentos and such, it still has a very solid base of excellent musicianship.

First released in 1961, Improvisations features some ahead-of-the-curve jazz-Indian fusion, thanks to Ravi Shankar's collaboration with bassist Gary Peacock and saxophonist Bud Shank. The album also includes Shankar's improvisations on the theme he wrote for the film "Pather Panchali," by Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, as well as the three-part "Raga Rageshri." A visionary recording…

With this amazing album, Dead Can Dance fully took the plunge into the heady mix of musical traditions that would come to define its sound and style for the remainder of its career. The straightforward goth affectations are exchanged for a sonic palette and range of imagination. Calling it "haunting" and "atmospheric" barely scratches even the initial surface of the album's power. The common identification of the duo with a consciously medieval European sound starts here – quite understandable, when one considers the mystic titles of songs, references to Latin, choirs, and other touches that make the album sound like it was recorded in an immense cathedral.

From the opening chant of the Yakushiji monks, it is apparent that this is going to be a special offering from Kitaro. The legendary World Music pioneer’s live album is a two-CD set recorded over three evenings in the sacred Yakushiji Temple in the ancient Japanese capital, Nara. With full instrumentation, Kitaro reprises nine favorite compositions from earlier albums, plus his Golden Globe Award-winning theme from the Oliver Stone film Heaven & Earth and two previously unreleased tracks. This is a tour de force for Kitaro and ensemble. All the drama, grace and humanity of his usual offerings are here with the added immediacy of the live recording and the profound spirit of the Yakushiki monks who appear on the previously unreleased "Wa" in addition to the opening track. Live in Yakushiji is a broad and deep journey, to inner realms as well as exotic earthly destinations.

Down the Road is the twenty-ninth studio album by Northern Irish singer Van Morrison. The album has a nostalgic tone, lyrically and musically, and its arrangements mix R&B and blues with country and folk, and with a few exceptions, like "Georgia on My Mind," the music is most often rooted in 1950s and early 1960s popular music.

Compiled by the man largely responsible for the 'acid jazz' movement [a tongue in cheek answer to 'acid house'!], Jazz Juice was Gilles Peterson's first series of compilations made when he was still in his early twenties. The selections across these eight volumes were lovingly compiled and came to represent what was to be a resurgence of interest in all things 'cool' in jazz in the eighties, when jazz was brought to the club dancefloors via DJ sets for the first time and lost Afro-Cuban & Latin Jazz, rare grooves and Blue Note releases were keenly revived. The mastery and vision of the enduring Marc Ribot shine through on this release. Although there have been many attempts to produce authentic indigenous music of various cultures, most have fallen short; this album succeeds in the wake of failure. Ribot delves deep into Cuban rhythms, and indeed the album is a tribute to the Cuban master Arsenio Rodriguez. Here Ribot finds an authentic Cuban sound employing traditional instrumentation: upright bass, wood blocks, cherke, and other percussion sounds. The performance is inspired, and the band consistently tears through Rodriguez's material, as well as some of their own. Ribot's guitar work nears perfection, and he proves himself to be the most soulful white alive. Songs like "Aqui Como Alla" and "Postizo" confirm these assertions.

Waylon Jennings spent 20 years with RCA Records, signing with the label in 1965 and remaining with them until 1985, when he moved on to record for MCA Records. Needless to say, his key creative years were with RCA, particularly after 1972, when Jennings renegotiated his deal to give him more artistic control over what he produced. This box set package includes five of the resulting RCA albums that Jennings produced between 1973 and 1978, including 1973's Lonesome, On'ry and Mean, 1974's This Time and The Ramblin' Man, 1977's Ol' Waylon, and 1978's Waylon & Willie (with Willie Nelson), with whatever bonus tracks that were included on RCA's individual CD reissues of each album. It's a whole lot of Waylon, probably more than the casual listener would need and serious fans would most likely already have all of, but a big chunk of Jennings' legacy is here, so it makes an easy way to connect with his most creative period as an artist in one simple swoop.
