Ibn Battuta had the same significance in the Muslim world as Marco Polo in the Western countries. A relentless traveler, he deeply changed the perception of the Orient among his contemporaries and the following generations. Morocco, Mali, Egypt, Yemen, Zanzibar, India, The Maldives and China: this non-exhaustive list gives us a hint about the extraordinary journey Jordi Savall invites us on.

The three women that make up the early music ensemble Sinfonye tap into some of medieval France’s more lively and entertaining repertoire in this generously filled program of 13th-century songs and motets. Not surprisingly for performances of music from this period, the singers have assumed a certain interpretive license, not only in terms of the specifics of the vocal lines but also regarding accompaniments, which include the delightfully reedy sounds of hurdy-gurdy and medieval fiddle. In some cases, they begin with a piece in its more formal written form–a motet–and extract what probably was the original melody that inspired it.

I recently heard Norbert Rodenkirchen perform at Tanglewood in the Berkshires, and the memorable and beautiful music presented led me to hunt down this most recent of his recordings. The technical quality of the recording is first rate, and the melodies are wonderful. Mr. Rodenkirchen's performance is central, and the wooden transverse flutes he plays produce a clear and haunting tone. Listening, one can actually imagine such music enticing the children to follow the musician! Lutes, psaltery, drums and viols gently accompany the flute on several pieces, but always in a gentle and complementary fashion that does not detract from the central focus on the flute.

As Notherners, we may be surprised to hear of Mediterraneans praising the month of May as eagerly as we do ourselves. Gathering around our bonfires on the last day of April, singing Northern May songs in shivering cold as a final farewell to Winter, we rather expect May to be full summer in Rome, Avignon or Barcelona. However, already in the Middle Ages, from Occitan troubadours of the 12th century onwards, we find the month of May celebrated as the true Spring month - not least in the present selection of songs and instrumental music from the late 14th and early 15th centuries. (Guillaume Legrant seems to be alone here in mentioning April as the suitable time for gathering flowers, but even then, the purpose seems to be preparations for coming May festivities…).

According to Islam’s earliest prophetic tradition, travel as training and a source of knowledge was advocated by the prophet Mohammed himself; he urged believers to travel far and wide in their search for wisdom and knowledge. One of the quotations attributed to him is “Seek knowledge even unto China.” The reader of Ibn Battuta’s fascinating travelogue discovers and experiences the full character of this literary genre, the “rihla”, which designates both the journey and the narrative of that journey. The genre can be traced back to the writings of Ibn Jubayr (1145-1217), the first great Muslim traveller from al-Andalus (Xativa, Valencia).

The pure voices of Anna Maria Friman, Linn Andrea Fuglseth, and Torunn Østrem Ossum combine to make Trio Mediaeval a sensation among early music fans. Yet Soir, dit-elle is largely an album of contemporary works written especially for this group by such active composers as Gavin Bryars, Ivan Moody, Andrew Smith, and Oleh Harkavyy. With the exception of the late medieval Missa Alma redemptoris mater by Leonel Power and the twelfth century chant on which it is based, the works are modern imitations in the medieval ecclesiastical style.

Gothic Voices, the world-famous early music ensemble, makes its Linn debut with a recording celebrating the biblical matriarch Mary. Pieces from contemporary composers Joanne Metcalf and Andrew Smith sit alongside settings of Marian texts from the 13th and 14th centuries. Notably, there is a rare setting of English biblical text which precedes the first publication of an English language bible by 150 years. Mary in her various guises - caring mother, virgin lover, guiding light - are explored through settings of ancient ritualistic texts showing her mythical and human aspects, whilst contemporary settings relate the themes to the modern day. The contemporary works are cleverly constructed around a modal core so that they fit perfectly with the structure and sound of the early music compositions. With over thirty years experience Gothic Voices' complete understanding of every aspect of early music performance is exceptional.

Songs from Ms. Oxford, Bodleian Library, Canonici Misc. 213. The Dutch recorder player Kees Boeke is a busy bee. From sunny Tuscany he produces, together with soprano Jill Feldman, not only his own olive oil and wine, but also his own CDs with Olive Music. Since 2003 CDs with new but especially old music have appeared here. An old love of Boeke is the music of around 1400, and this CD is also dedicated to this. And it is these unknown others who get all the attention here. They will be more than happy with this, because as always the musicians around Boeke deliver top performances. The singers Zsuzsu Tóth and Carlos Mena are exemplarily accompanied in their graceful but extremely difficult lines by fiddles, harp and flute. The thoughtful approach of Boeke also ensures that we hear all the refined subtleties in music.

This is the second New Series album to feature the Stuttgart-based Ensemble Belcanto. Where its 2001 predecessor focused on contemporary composition by Wolfgang Rihm and others (Come un'ombra di luna), this disc looks at Hildegard of Bingen's Ordo Virtutum, written around 1150 and generally considered the first large-scale musical work beyond the prescribed form of the Mass liturgy. This is sacred music reflecting Medieval thought, as music and morality play are intertwined. In her creative interpretation, Belcanto leader Dietburg Spohr waives claims to 'objective' historical literalness. Instead, she and her fellow singers encounter the work as if it were written specifically for the Ensemble Belcanto: "We sought to free Hildegard from mystical-esoteric associations and to emphasize the work of an emancipated woman and composer." They have been performing the music of Hildegard von Bingen since the early 1990s, and view her compositions as a joyously experimental bridge between the Middle Ages and contemporary music.

The program is taken from the Squarcialupi Codex, a lavish manuscript of 14th-century Italian music, named after a 15th-century organist at the cathedral of Florence who came into possession of it. It is located in a Florence library but is now available in a very expensive facsimile. The music, all secular works originating in Florence, is grouped by composer (a portrait illuminates each group) and arranged in chronological order of their age. The first five composers have only six selections here, with the rest of the disc devoted to Bartolino and Andreas. The disc takes its title from Giovanni’s madrigal in praise of music, the first piece on the disc.

Matteo da Perugia is one of the outstanding composer personalities in Italy at the transition between the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. Yet we know little about his life. We do not know the date of his birth, not even the year, nor is it certain whether the suffix “da Perugia” really means that Matteo came from this city. Relatively well documented, however, is his compositional work: all the compositions that are attributable with certainty to Matteo have survived in the same Codex.

The “Red Book” of Monterrat, the only medieval manuscript that survived the destruction of the monastery by Napoleon’s army in 1811 (it was out on loan and had to be bought back in 1885), has fared well on records, for its 10 pilgrim songs to the Blessed Virgin of Read more Mariam matrem virginem , although even with five strophes the song was no longer than several other pieces in the book.

If you could only have two Christmas CDs, Kathleen Battle's "A Christmas Celebration" would definitely be one (and "A Charlie Brown Christmas" would be the other.)While Battle has been known to be a temperamental diva (leading to a quasi-banishment from operatic roles), her pretty, soaring soprano is without peer. So good is her voice that I would consider several of the cuts on this disc to be definitive performances, not only of Battle's repertoire, but of all performances ever of that song.Case in point would be her rendition of Gounod's "Ave Maria". Haunting and stunning at the same time, it's as if the angel itself were singing. "Mary Had a Baby" is another fabulously rendered, gospel-tinged beauty. One of the other strengths of the collection is the sheer breadth of carols and hymns. Modern, traditional, and ancient songs are here. Common carols and more unusual ones appear.
