Genre: Classical / Label: Naxos

The songs of Dmitry Shostakovich reflect the process of allusion and concealment that permeated his larger-scale music, and this selection traces his musical career from lighthearted early experiments to his late work. Settings of the composers most loved poets are included, from Marina Tsvetayeva and Mikhail Lermontov to Shakespeare, as well as settings of Jewish folk poetry. The songs are richly varied and include cabaret-like moments, romantic balladry, the avant-garde and satirical subversion.

Dominik Wörner (bass-baritone) and the Kirchheimer DübenConsort he founded focus in this recording on twelve pieces from the famous Düben collection and document in an exemplary way the enormous versatility of this unique collection, which was only discovered by chance in the 19th century.Ten composers from Schütz (his Nunc dimittis can be heard in an arrangement by Gustav Düben) to Capricornus and Pallavicino – including two anonymous authors – span a chronological arc over 80 years of eventful European music history from 1640 to 1720. Six instrumental pieces are combined with six vocal scores to form a multi-faceted programme, most of which have been recorded here for the first time.Under the direction of Jörg-Andreas Bötticher, the ensemble, which is made up of top-class specialists from the early music scene, succeeds in producing inspiring interpretations in the then widespread consort formation of two violins, two viols, violone, theorbo, dulcian and organ. Dominik Wörner presents himself here once again in top form – a very rewarding treasure trove of repertoire, which has been successfully and extremely skilfully brought to life!

Many associate the countertenor voice with Baroque music and powdered wigs, but it is something altogether different that singer Daniel Sæther offers us on his debut album. “Unexpected Songs” is something unusual — contemporary music for countertenor, featuring works by Arne Nordheim, Conrad Baden, Egil Hovland and Kjell Mørk Karlsen.
The musical expression covers a wide spectrum, which is reflected in the instrumentation on the album. The participating musicians are Caroline Eidsten Dahl (recorder), Lynetta Taylor Hansen (flute), Marianne Svenning (oboe), Ida Bryhn (viola), Anne Stine Dahl (cello), Henrikke G. Rynning (gamba), Vegard Lund (theorbo), Birgitte Volan Håvik (harp), Lars Henrik Johansen (harpsichord) and Anders Eidsten Dahl (organ), and we get to hear them in a number of different constellations together with Sæther. Many of the texts are religious in nature, taken from, for example, the Book of Psalms and the Catholic Mass, but we also find texts of the Italian poet Torquato Tasso and Norway’s own Henrik Wergeland.

An anniversary accolade with a twist: one hundred and fifty years after his birth, this is a wonderful recital of some of the many works dedicated to Leopold Godowsky. It’s difficult to imagine more persuasive performances than these by Andrey Gugnin, who makes a second appearance on Hyperion after his universally—and vociferously—acclaimed Shostakovich.

In November 2019, an opera sensation was to be experienced at the Leverkusen Erholungshaus: 232 years after its creation, a comic opera was premiered with "Scherz, List und Rache" (Joke, Cunning and Revenge), for which no one less than Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had written the libretto. The music for it came from Goethe's childhood friend Philipp Christoph Kayser (1755-1823). Inspired by the Italian buffo opera, Goethe and Kayser wanted to create a new kind of German opera with "Scherz, List und Rache". The result was a turbulent three-person play about a young married couple who were cheated out of their inheritance by an old money-hungry doctor. In 2019 it was conductor Werner Ehrhardt and his ensemble l'arte del mondo who performed this opera rarity for the first time in its original instrumentation for large orchestra. Annika Boos, Cornel Frey and Florian Götz took over the vocal parts peppered with virtuoso passages. This is the world premiere recording of the singspiel in co-production with WDR and Bayer Arts & Culture

Handel came to the city of Hamburg in the summer of 1703 and played as a violinist in the theatre at the Gänsemarkt, the local market place. On later occasions, he also played the harpsichord in the orchestra. His first opera – announced as a Singspiel although it has no spoken dialogue – was premiered on 8 January 1705, after being composed in the months directly preceding this. An Italian libretto was written by Giulio Pancieri in Venice in 1691 for Giuseppe Boniventi's opera L'Almira. The German translation used by Handel was made by Friedrich Christian Feustking. The recitatives of the opera are in German, while some of the arias are also in German, others in Italian, as was the custom at the opera house in Hamburg. Almira is the sole example among Handel's many operas with no role for a castrato.

Italian pianist Michele Campanella has become renowned as a Liszt specialist, but with customary modesty and respect for the composer's music he has chosen to wait until now to record the seminal 'Années de pèlerinage'. The desire to get to grips with these pieces dates back 50 years to when Campanella was first starting to play Liszt's music, but he waited, recognising that maturity and experience would bring him closer to Liszt's own state of mind as he composed these pieces. Liszt's dazzling virtuosity is often emphasised, but in this recording Campanella has accentuated the composer's more introspective tendencies, making this a unique and truly insightful interpretation.

Alexandre Tharaud has always defied categorization—a rare musician who dazzles equally in J.S. Bach as he does in The Beach Boys, and everything in between. Pieced together from recordings made over 30 years, this collection finds Tharaud steering us on a four-hour journey through some of the piano’s greatest solo works, thrilling and beautiful concerto movements, and an array of ravishing discoveries including the charming, post-Impressionist worlds of French composers Paul Le Flem and Jean Wiener. Elsewhere, the variety on display is breathtaking, the programming daring as Tharaud moves seamlessly from Satie to Bach, Fauré to Gershwin, even Morricone to Poulenc. It’s a bold move to place Debussy’s sumptuous “Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune” after the crispness of Mozart’s “Alla Turca", for instance, but the contrast is spellbinding—as is every moment of this extraordinary piano treasury.

A compilation of quartets by Schumann, Shostakovich and Caroline Shaw from the acclaimed American string quartet, Calidore String Quartet, exploring the visceral forms of expression that exist at the intersection of music and language. For this recording the Calidore String Quartet gathered music which transmits ideas by imitating language; its rhythms, cadences and intentions. But it also explores what happens when music substitutes for language. When it fills the void of forbidden speech or even how it carries on when language has been exhausted.
