World Music / Balkan Music / Gypsy Music

Goran Bregović has done it all. A rock star in the former Yugoslavia, he went on write film scores and ride the fashion for brassy Balkan Gypsy music, selling over 6m albums and collaborating with everyone from Iggy Pop to the Gipsy Kings. Now he celebrates the history of his birthplace Sarajevo, a meeting place for Christians, Muslims and Jews before the Balkan war, with a wildly varied set. There are instrumental pieces honouring the three religions, each dominated by a different violinist, and including powerful atmospheric work from Tunisia’s Zied Zouari. They would work well as a documentary soundtrack. And then there are songs, many of which develop into a brassy knees-up. The cast includes the cool and dramatic Spanish singer Bebe, the Israeli folk-rocker Asaf Avidan, and – best of all – the exuberant Algerian rai-punk rocker Rachid Taha. Patchy, maybe, but often enormous fun.

The unique sound of Luanda 1965-1978! The nascent Angolan music scene was set on fire by a small group of intrepid singers, backed by an array of super tight bands and led by extraordinary guitarists who revolutionized the musical and the political panorama of the 60s and 70s. A powerful confluence of traditional rhythms from Luanda's islands, psychedelic guitar sounds imported from neighbouring Congo, Latin grooves, old school Caribbean merengue and the hard beat of the angolan carnival bands conspired to create the modern music of Angola. These sounds were immortalized by two excellent recording companies - Fadiang (fábrica de discos angolano) and Valentim de Carvalho.

From the Philip Glass Archive is a series of releases from Orange Mountain Music which seeks to document archival and unreleased material or reissue classic albums by Philip Glass. The current volume, the sixth, features a collaboration between Glass and African musician Foday Musa Suso from a score they both worked on in the 1990s. The work was incidental music to the play The Screens by Jean Genet and was directed by JoAnne Akalaitis. Glass described the collaboration as the closest thing he had come to at that point of a true collaboration with both artists contributing original pieces and both working on many in the score together. The Screens was originally released on Point Music in the late 1990s. Orange Mountain Music is also pleased to present this remastered version with the inclusion of two bonus tracks of Philip Glass and Foday Musa Suso LIVE, recorded in New York in 2009.

This is Manegarm's acoustic folk EP (or mini album, as it's labeled by the label) - and that pretty much sums it up to a tee. There isn't a hint of a plugged-in instrument here, and hence, nothing that can be labeled as "metal" (unless you consider some shouted vocals as being inherently metallic). Acoustic guitars play behind or alongside fiddles (which are the predominant instrument throughout) while more esoteric hand drums, mouth harps and other folk-instruments-that-I-don't-know-the-name-of join in. Atmospheric, woodland samples of birdies, breezes, clopping hooves and crackling fires are used to good effect to set the verdant visuals. Vocals switch back and forth between clean female and male vocals (both sung in that flat, vibrato-heavy "Viking" way), gang chorus shouts pop up occasionally ("HEY!"), as do angry, grittier male vocals ("GRRR!" - um - no one actually goes "Grrr" - it just seemed to fit in that space. They really do yell "HEY!" though).
