Mugen is a legendary band of the Eighties Progressive rock scene, along with Outer Limits, Gerard or Pageant. Reissued by the Musea label, "Sinfonia Della Luna" (1984) offers a refined, precious and majestuous symphonic music. It's based upon themes with sophisticated melodies and classic movements which are developped by Katsuhiko Hayashi's keyboards (Notably the fabulous Mellotron). This masterpiece can remind symphonic works from Italian groups such as Banco del Mutuo Soccorso or Premiata Forneria Marconi.

Professor Sakamoto gives a lesson on what is practically a different style of music with each track on Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia, beginning with a sure-fire hit: the extroverted, quintessentially Japanese synth workout "Field Work" (with Thomas Dolby). From there, Sakamoto hits riff-ready crossover jazz-fusion ("Etude"), electronic minimalism ("M.A.Y. in the Backyard"), and Oriental dub ("Paradise Lost"). There is a return to sampladelic Eastern synth-pop with "Steppin' Into Asia," but for the most part Sakamoto displays his impressive stylistic range on this solo album.

A smorgasbord album, the cast list includes Bjork, Siouxsie Sioux, Brendan Perry, and long-term sidekick Barbera Googan. As expected, the mood is cold, often somber in tone. Only on "The Long Voyage," a springy ditty fronted by Suzanne Vega and John Cale, does the album ascend from the depths. Some of the gloom works, like in "Havet Stomar," a brilliant slow burner with B.J. Cole's pedal steel guitar and ECM artist Lene Willemark's chilling howls. "Annukka Suaren Neito" presents what must be the closest to an Eskimo rap you can get. Mark Isham provides freestyle trumpet that almost sounds like seagulls swooping the skies. The Jane Siberry-fronted "She Is Like the Swallow" is a beauty, as soft as it is light. Hector Zazou's electronics are in fine check too. The canvas expands to new textures, such as metallic percussion in "Adventures in the Scandinavian Skin Trade".

Founded in 1966 by high-school students, Japan’s The Mops originally were a garage rock band in the style of their heroes, US instrumental / surf rockers The Ventures. On the suggestion of their manager, The Mops later adopted a psychedelic direction and released their first album in this style in 1968. Rock and pop music tastes and trends changed again, The Mops changed their style and their record label, and by 1970 had become a blues-influenced hard rock band that, paradoxically, combined a deranged edge with a desire to please listeners by covering amazingly schlock-rock pop numbers in case the rugged stuff might be too much for sensitive ears…
