Canadian pianist Alain Lefèvre has long championed the music of pianist-composer André Mathieu (1929-1968). As a child prodigy, Mathieu caused a sensation as ‘the Canadian Mozart’ in New York and Paris (where he studied with Yves Nat and Arthur Honegger), but he eventually died in poverty at the age of just 39. On this album, Lefèvre and fellow pianist Hélène Mercier play three works written by Mathieu in the 1940s. “André Mathieu’s music it has its own place in the history of composition,” says Lefèvre. “It has been described as Romantic, and obviously was out of step with its own age, but does that really matter today?”

There is an indisputable historical link between Beethoven and Indian culture: in his quest to fathom the depths of this culture, and captivated by the translation of the Upanishads that was published in Germany in 1816, he immersed himself well and truly in these ancient texts, just as Schopenhauer did, or like Goethe discovering the great Persian poet Hafez when writing his last major collection, the 'West-Eastern Divan'. We see here a mystical Beethoven, scrutinising man and the cosmos and especially curious about other cultures.

“For me, Strauss is one of the greatest composers,” Diana Damrau has said. “The way he handles the soprano voice is a joy. And to be able to sing his music with my voice feels like coming home.” The centrepiece of this album of Strauss songs is the sublime Vier letzte Lieder, in which Damrau – born and trained in Bavaria – joins forces with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and its long-standing Chief Conductor Mariss Jansons, in what was to become his final recording. Her partner in a tempting and diverse selection of songs with piano is Helmut Deutsch. “Not only is Strauss’s music gorgeous,” says Damrau, “there’s the way he combines words and notes – and the psychology.”

We are so excited and thrilled to finally reveal this project, which we have been imagining and developing for months… « Nos 4 saisons », our four seasons! We heard The Four Seasons for the first time before we even knew how to talk, and the sound of the violin is one of our first memories. It's as if we always knew we would return to this repertoire one day, that we would happily dive back into our childhood. Vivaldi has laid the foundations of all modern music with his work, and if you listen well, you find his harmonies in all of today’s pop music. With this album, we built our own bridge between classical music that made us grow and the song that has soothed us for a long time. It was obvious for us to record these four seasons together, as sisters, with our common vision of the work.” – Camille & Julie Berthollet

It was subsequently nominated for two top awards, Gramophone and Opus Klassik.

Charles Tournemire's huge cycle L'Orgue Mystique (written 1927-1932) is a collection of two hundred and fifty-three works for the liturgical calendar of the Catholic church as it was in his time as Organiste Titulaire of the church of St Clothilde in Paris, from 1898 to his death in 1939 (his predecessors were Gabriel Pierné and César Franck; amongst his successors was Jean Langlais). They are all based on the Gregorian chant for the day. This piece, from the Cycle de Noël, is the 'Offertoire' of the Mass for the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Performed by Georges Delvallée on the 1880 Cavaillé-Coll organ (4/61, 72 ranks) in the Cathedral of Saint-Croix, Orléans.

This album brings together world premiere recordings of three aesthetically diverse piano concertos that were written for Alexandre Tharaud. They are Left, alone by the Dane Hans Abrahamsen (b. 1952), Future is a faded song by the Frenchman Gérard Pesson (b.1958) and Kuleshov by the Argentian-born Frenchman Oscar Strasnoy (b.1970). Strasnoy has said that his concerto was “inspired by Alexandre Tharaud’s unique and inimitable phrasing and clarity of playing.” No doubt those words could apply to all three works on the album.

The recordings of violinist Christian Ferras demonstrate a curious duality of style: on the one hand a tightly wound, somewhat harsh, brassy sound with nagging and intrusive vibrato (found particularly in some of his later work); on the other, a warmer, more old-fashioned, Romantic approach, with conspicuous portamenti and tempo rubato. To some extent, chronology plays a part—recordings before 1960 tend towards the latter style—but this is not clear-cut. It may be that Ferras consciously began to impose a modernist style on Classical works in keeping with current trends (which would explain why his 1964 Sibelius Concerto has stylistic traits in common with his 1951 Beethoven); but however this may be, a detailed study of Ferras’s whole discography would give fascinating insights into post-war stylistic change in established repertoire. Ferras’s struggle with depression that, tragically, led to his suicide at the age of forty nine, may also be a factor in his changeable interpretative approach.

Following in the triumphant footsteps of Les Troyens, also recorded at the Auditorium Erasme in Strasbourg, this performance reunites Nelson and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg with singers Michael Spyres, Joyce DiDonato and Nicolas Courjal.
