Eugene Record is best known as lead singer of The Chi-Lites. He demonstrated skills as a songwriter, arranger and producer for the group and other artists on the Brunswick label in the 60s and 70s In 1977 he moved to Warner Brothers for three albums, the first two of which are presented here. The collection of songs includes what is considered as his best solo work, Overdose Of Joy. It is the defining moment from his time as a solo artist, but the craftsmanship and beauty of the record is further evident on songs across these two albums on other standout moments including Here Comes The Sun and We Belong Together in his melancholic style.

There have been numerous attempts at summarizing Phyllis Hyman's career on one disc. Most have been severely flawed, whether it has come down to missing hit singles or poor selection of album cuts. And while Hyman didn't have that many chart hits (at least when compared to several of her contemporaries), there has always been the need for a double-disc compilation that goes deeper – allowing space for all the major singles and album cuts that deserve more attention. The Legacy of Phyllis Hyman fills that void. Although it might be a little too much for the person who just wants the songs heard on the radio, it's the next best thing to having all of her studio albums (all of which are spotty in varying degrees).

Finally, two of soul music's most classic albums get a release on CD for the first time. The Main Ingredient have made a huge contribution to the success of this genre over the years, especially the 70s and 80s. Only a few of their hits have been re-issued over the years, and classics such as Just Don't Want To be Lonely and Everybody Plays The Fool have been on compilations, but these albums have been overlooked.

In the 1950s he recorded doo-wop, in the 60s it was jazz, blues and big band swing, then come the 70s it was silky soul as epitomised by Gamble & Huff's. You'll Never Find (Another Love Like Mine) for Philadelphia International Records. Now Is The Time and Close Company, neither previously available on CD, find Lou at the tail end of his soul years ahead of his return to jazzier roots and a record deal with Blue Note.

In a Detroit classroom, two budding musicians with a love of soul and jazz became acquainted, they were guitarist Earl Klugh and drummer Gene Dunlap In 1978 Earl was a featured artist for Blue Note on an album “Blue Note Meets The L.A. Philharmonic” supported by Gene on drums. As Earl became more established as a solo performer, Gene played for him on professional dates and the affiliation continued through Earl’s solo recordings with United Artists and Liberty, part of the Capitol Records family of labels. It was Earl who took Gene to Capitol in 1981 for the two albums presented here.

On their fifth full-length album, Stronger, Cool Million continue to deliver classic-sounding grooves fronted by strong vocalists with warm melodies and enticing lyrics. Some selections stick to the template of at once retro and modern polished soul arrangements underscored with R&B- and disco-fueled tracks—which they’ve been noted for since 2008. The production duo, however, also delves into the electro-funk realm on several cuts, while exploring the slow-jam quotient more widely than on previous efforts. Furthermore, unlike most of the preceding sets, the focus here shifts from longstanding vocalists to up-and-coming artists.

In 1978, disco was king. For those who were not born or are not old enough to recall the cultural juggernaut that was disco in the last three years of the 1970s, consider this: Rock performers such as Rod Stewart and the Rolling Stones made disco songs in 1978, such was the pressure to be a part of this musical trend. Earth, Wind & Fire was likely in the studio working on an album that would include one of the era's best disco anthems. The genre was at its absolute apex, and the great fall that was about a year away was nowhere in sight.
It was at this time that Womack released Pieces, now being reissued by Purpose Vaults. And while it would be incorrect to call Pieces a disco album, Womack clearly heard the songs played on the radio, Nor can it be said that Womack was solely motivated by commercial concerns. LIke all great artists, Womack is a curious soul who is more than willing to step outside of perceived musical boxes.

The original group (then known as The Lovelles) was from Tampa, Florida, and formed in 1966 with a line-up of Albert Bailey, Brenda Hilliard and Zulema Cusseaux. Their first hit single in 1970 was on Maxwell Records with “So Much Love,” produced by McCoy who had been instrumental in securing their first record deal. After switching to Sussex Records, Cusseaux left for a solo career, and in 1975, Hilliard (‘Faith’) and Bailey (‘Hope’) were joined by Dianne Destry (‘Charity’) just prior to signing a new contract with RCA, reuniting with Van McCoy as their producer.
